1. What This Policy Covers
This Cookie Policy explains how and why Kempston Pilots (hello@kempstonpilots.com) uses cookies and similar technologies — such as localStorage, sessionStorage, and pixel tags — when you visit https://kempstonpilots.com and any of its game subdomains.
It should be read alongside our Privacy Policy. The Privacy Policy covers how we handle personal data in general; this Cookie Policy zooms in specifically on in-browser storage and tracking technologies.
2. What a Cookie Is (and What Isn't)
A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to store so it can recognise you between page loads. Related technologies include localStorage and sessionStorage (similar storage areas with more capacity), and invisible tracking pixels that work by fetching a small image and sending request metadata.
When we talk about "cookies" in this policy we mean all of those, unless we say otherwise. Your browser lets you inspect, block, and delete them at any time — usually via Settings → Privacy.
3. Categories We Use
We classify in-browser storage into three categories. Strictly-necessary items are always active because the site cannot function without them. The other two categories are OFF by default and only turn on if you accept them via the consent banner.
3.1 Strictly-necessary storage
| Name | Where stored | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
kp_player_id |
localStorage | Random anonymous UUID used to associate your leaderboard submissions with a single player across sessions. Does not identify you personally. | Until you clear browser storage |
kp_geo_cache |
localStorage | Caches the approximate city and country returned by ipapi.co so we don't have to ask the service on every page load. | 7 days, then refreshed |
kp_cookie_consent_v1 |
localStorage | Remembers your cookie-banner choice so we don't nag you on every visit. | 180 days |
3.2 Advertising (Google AdSense) — requires consent
If you accept advertising cookies, Google AdSense scripts load and may set cookies such as __gads, __gpi, IDE, and ANID on Google-controlled domains. These are used by Google and its partners to measure ad performance, limit how many times you see the same ad, and — where allowed by law — personalise the ads you see.
We do not set these cookies ourselves; Google sets them on its own domains. You can review and change your ad settings at any time at Google Ad Settings, and you can opt out of additional third-party vendors at aboutads.info/choices and youronlinechoices.eu.
Google's own description of AdSense cookies is available at policies.google.com/technologies/ads.
3.3 Analytics — requires consent (currently not used)
The category exists for transparency and to anticipate future needs. We do not currently run Google Analytics or any equivalent analytics tool on this site. Enabling the "Analytics" toggle today has no effect. If that changes we will update this policy and re-prompt for consent.
4. Legal Basis for Consent
Depending on your location, different rules apply:
- EEA / UK: Under the ePrivacy Directive and the GDPR we rely on your consent for non-essential cookies (advertising, analytics). Strictly-necessary storage is exempt from this consent requirement.
- California (CCPA/CPRA): You have the right to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information. Rejecting advertising cookies in our banner is treated as an opt-out for this purpose. You can also send a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, which we treat as an opt-out.
- Other regions: Where no consent is required by law, we still give you a real choice via the same banner.
5. How to Manage or Withdraw Consent
You can change your choice any time. Three options:
- Click the 🍪 Manage cookies pill at the bottom-left of any page on this site.
- Clear browser storage for kempstonpilots.com. On your next visit, the consent banner will reappear.
- Open the preferences directly:
Most browsers also let you block cookies globally or per site. Doing so may break the leaderboard (it will simply fail to remember you across sessions), but it will not break anything else.
6. "Do Not Track" and Global Privacy Control
We respect the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal as an opt-out request for the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information where applicable. The older browser "Do Not Track" header is not reliably interpreted across the web, and we do not treat it as a consent signal on its own; however, setting GPC or explicitly rejecting non-essential cookies in our banner achieves the same effect.
7. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy to reflect changes in the tools we use or in applicable law. Substantive changes are announced at the top of the page via an updated revision date, and users who previously gave consent may be prompted to re-confirm their choices.
